Eight Days to Go
The light in our bedroom looked different the next morning. I sprawled across Robbieâs chest, letting my arm drape lazily over him as I enjoyed that post-coital contentment. Our efforts last night turned into a deep sleep, followed by an early wake up, followed by an early wake up call. The bed was still slanted at an awkward angle, but that didnât deter us.
Robbie filled me in on how work was going after our string of uncommunicative days, his voice full of energy as he spoke about their new client, a folky band from Williamsburg he said was going to be the next Mumford & Sons.
I smiled as I listened, all the angst I held onto over late nights and coworkers melting away into the crumpled sheets. He was going for it, and I had to admit I was proud of him. It took a lot of ambition to walk away from a multi-million-dollar trust fund for an entry level gig and an apartment the size of a shoebox.
He reached for his phone on the bedside table, and I could hear him typing away, preparing for another day of hustling. His enthusiasm was contagious. It almost made me excited to go into work, Barb and all. Almost.
âIâm going to jump in the shower,â he said, pulling me toward him with the crook of his elbow and kissing the top of my head. As he walked into the bathroom, I enjoyed the view from behind.
âI hope youâre not objectifying me over there,â he called out.
I grinned and rolled onto my back. âWouldnât dream of it, dear.â
I stretched my arms above my head, wrapping my fingers around the wooden slats of my bedhead. Maybe this time I could afford to go into a furniture store for a replacement instead of trawling the bedbug haven of Craigslist. Though I couldnât deny, Iâd had pretty good luck with Craigslist in the past.
Robbieâs phone pinged on the table beside me. And then it pinged again. Out of nowhere, I had the fleeting idea to look at the screen. My dad always said I was overly inquisitive. Nosey Parker was what he used to call me. I had no idea who the hell that was, but I knew it wasnât a compliment.
The noise of the shower running stopped and within seconds Robbie walked back in, a towel wrapped around his waist and beads of water trickling down his tanned chest. I rolled onto my stomach, resting my chin in my hands and smiling sweetly up at him.
âCan I interest you in a, what are we up to, round five?â
Robbie laughed, taking the towel and rubbing it up and down his front and over his hair, leaving the rest exposed. âAre you trying to kill me?â
He leaned down and kissed me, his lips moist and cool. âI promise you can put my cardiac health to the test later.â
I pouted as he checked his phone, a gigantic smile spreading across his mouth as he typed a reply.
